Focus: God Is Deep!
Text: Ps.95:4
"In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also."
God is deep, and deeply unfathomable. There is nothing shallow or peripheral about God. He is mystery personified. "In his hands," according to the psalmist, "are the deep places of the earth." No place is hidden in God's sight. Isaiah says of Him, "It is he that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in" (Isa.40:22).
*His deep thoughts
Truly the God we serve is too deep. He is deeper and loftier than all our theologies. He is beyond what the human mind can grasp. The psalmist says, "O LORD, how great are thy works! and THY THOUGHTS ARE VERY DEEP" (Ps.92:5). God's mind has no need of development. There is nothing to know that He knows not, and He knows perfectly every detail of everything that there is to know.
*His deep judgments
The psalmist says, "Thy righteousness is like the great mountains; THY JUDGMENTS ARE A GREAT DEEP: O LORD, thou preservest man and beast" (Ps.36:6). He is the Judge who delivers accurate and just judgments. He is not a respecter of persons. He cannot be bribed, induced or influenced in His delivery of justice. His decisions are sound, and His laws, perfect.
*His wisdom and knowledge
Paul exclaims, "O the DEPTHS of the riches both of the WISDOM and KNOWLEDGE of God! how unsearchable are his JUDGMENTS, and his WAYS past finding out!" (Rom.11:33). His wisdom, knowledge, judgments and ways are deep. Isaiah calls Him "the wonderful counselor." Paul tells us that even His foolishness is wiser than the wisdom of men. Everything that concerns God is well over our heads. It is not possible for the finite mind to comprehend the infinite. That would be like attempting to empty the ocean of water with a tea cup. It will take eternity for that to happen.
*His deep love
Concerning the love of God, Paul prays that we "may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the BREADTH, and LENGTH, and DEPTH, and HEIGHT" (Eph.3:18). God's love is deep, lofty, lengthy, and large. No one person can know it all. The testimony of God's love must come from all the saints of past, present and future. His love is peculiar for each person. His love has different angles and dimensions, and it surpasses knowledge.
*His deep revelations
God's revelations are very revealing. His presence illuminates the darkness. Daniel says, "He revealeth the DEEP and SECRET things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him" (Dan.2:22). Paul tells us, "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. BUT God hath REVEALED them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit SEARCHETH all things, yea, THE DEEP THINGS OF GOD" (1Cor.2:9-10).
*Satan's depths
In Rev.2:24, we are told of "the depths of Satan." But it is the depths of God that keeps Satan's depths in check. Isaiah declares that "when the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the LORD shall lift up a standard against him" (Isa.59:19). God can't let the devil win in your life, except you keep God out of your life and space. In fact you cannot fall beneath the hand of God. Moses tells us, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and UNDERNEATH are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them" (Dt.33:27). Even if Satan succeeds in knocking you down, he will not succeed in knocking you out. God's eyes and hands are everywhere.
*God is so deep
The psalmist, in Psalm 139, captures for us how deep God is, in terms of His omniscience, omnipotence and omnipresence. He says, "O LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off.
Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it.
Whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence?
If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee.
For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb.
I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.
My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.
Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.
How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them. If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee" (1-18).
You serve a very deep God. He is all-wise, all-knowing, all-seeing and all-powerful. He is your God. Worship Him! Acknowledge Him in all your ways! Be rest assured that His hand is upon you for good. Take time to meditate on His infinite wisdom and immaculate majesty! Rejoice for the fact that the God in your life has no rival and He is unbeatable!
