Focus: The Lord of the Wells
Text: Isa.12:3
"Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation."
I told you yesterday that the Lord's name occurs seven times in Isaiah 12, and it shows that He is the source and owner of the Wells. The Wells belong to and speak of Him. The Wells tell of His greatness, grace, goodness, and glory. He is the provider of the Wells. Important to note is the fact that it is a family well. The woman of Samaria tells us that Jacob and his children drank from the well. So God's well has to do with God's family.
*The Names
Now, here is how His name appears in each verse, apart from verse 3.
Verse one - LORD
Verse two - God, LORD, JEHOVAH
Verse 4 - LORD
Verse 5 - LORD
Verse 6 - the Holy One of Israel
In all, we have seven, and from this seven, we have three unique names - YHVH, El, and Holy One of Israel. He is YHVH, El, and the Holy One of Israel.
I love the names, but let's look at the last name - the Holy One of Israel. He attaches Himself to us. That is divine connection. That is affinity and kinship. His holiness is rubbing off on us. One outstanding name of Christ in the New Testament is 'Jesus of Nazareth.' Jesus connects with us in our lowliness. Philip once asked, "Can any good thing come out of Nazareth?" Nazareth was a place of no good, yet, he is called, 'Jesus of Nazareth.' He shares our shame and reproach. He identifies with nonentities and good-for-nothing people like us. He was known as Jesus of Nazareth by the people. He was not born there, but decided to pitch His tent with us. No one called Him, Jesus of Bethlehem.
In Mt.2:23, He came to live in Nazareth. In Mt.21:11, the crowd said, "This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee." In Mk.1:24, demons acknowledged Him as "Jesus of Nazareth." In fact, they said, "Thou JESUS OF NAZARETH? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the HOLY ONE of God." Did you notice the connection of two names? Jesus of Nazareth and the Holy One of God. That is the third name in Isaiah 12. Jesus of Nazareth is also the Holy One of God.
*So sweet a name!
O the holiness of God! It has no holes in it. Holiness with no holes in it. Perfect holiness! Utter holiness! Absolute holiness! Immaculate holiness! Awesome holiness! Indescribable holiness! Holiness is beautiful. Holiness makes for true happiness.
Let's move on. In Mk.10:47, Blind Bartimaeus met Him as Jesus of Nazareth, and he regained his sight. In Act.3:6 and 4:10, Jesus of Nazareth was the name by which the lame man miraculously walked. In Act.10:38, God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. God's anointing is on that name for the good works and for the miraculous. In Jh.19:19, He DIED as Jesus of Nazareth. In Mk.16:6, He ROSE from the dead as Jesus of Nazareth. In Lk.24:19, two disciples were discussing with Jesus, thinking that He was a total stranger, and they responded to His question about what happened in Jerusalem, and said, "Concerning JESUS OF NAZARETH, which was a PROPHET mighty in deed and word before God and all the people." In Act.22:8, He is seated in heaven as Jesus of Nazareth. That means that Jesus died with Nazareth on the cross, resurrected from the dead with Nazareth, ascended to heaven with Nazareth, and is sitting on the throne of heaven with Nazareth. He was anointed and worked miracles in affinity and kinship with Nazareth - and that is you and I.
*The name charms and changes us
Grace has changed our story. His holiness is impacting our lives. He has provided us with WELLS - that's inexhaustible plenitude.
He is indeed the content of the wells - the Living Water and the Bread of life.
Bow and worship at His feet. He is our Salvation and Song, and the wells are known as the Wells of Salvation. He is YHVH, the self-existent, changeless and covenant God. He is our El - the Strong One - "able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think." He is the Holy One of Israel, forever in union with us. We are charmed and changed by His name.
*Drink the names
We drink from the wells by considering Him, by meditating on Him, by looking on to Him, by clinging to Him, by talking and listening to Him, by following Him and obeying His voice.
There are no wells without Jesus Christ. He is our Yeshua. O the Wells of Scripture! Yes, the name of Jehovah sounds so sweet and emits infinite power! Amen.
