Focus: The Well Is Deep
Text: Jh.4:11
"The well is deep."
The first thing we read about this well is that it was called Jacob's well. Is there anything that is for the good of others that has your name on it? What is flowing out from you to others? In what ways are you letting God use you in touching others with His goodness? Are you sending your wealth to heaven ahead of time or are you lavishing it on yourself here on earth?
It was Jacob's well, but it served not only Jacob and his family, but also others and generations down the line. Jacob was generous with his well. He quenched the thirst of many in his time and people of other times. He dug the well at a very great cost, but it was worth it, for as long as it met a need in people's lives.
We should labor to leave behind the legacy of a good name, of love, of faith, and of hope. God wants to extend His blessings to others through us.
The next thing is that the well was deep. It was a well over 100ft deep. Every time I read, "The well is deep," what immediately comes to my mind is how deep God is. God is deep in everything. He is too deep for words. His love is deep. His word is deep. His logic is deep. His wisdom is deep. His judgments are deep. The mystery of His person is deep. The Christian faith is deep. His doctrine is deep. His ways are past finding out. His name - YHVH - is deep. No one can define God. He is too deep to be figured out by any individual or group of people. Embracing God is like launching oneself out into a great deep.
Let us draw from the depths of God. Let us go deeper into God. Let us quit staying on the periphery. Paul tells us about the "deep things of God." Describing the ascension of Jesus Christ, Paul says that he "ascended far above all heavens." Imagine that! That's really deep. The depths of God beat our minds and stagger our imaginations. Ezekiel says that as the man measured the river, it got to a point or level where the river became so overwhelming that he could not swim it. Then the river carried him and he sailed by the force of the river.
Paul says the revelations given to him were too deep for words and beyond what he could utter. Truly, everything about God is deep. Jesus says a spring would start gushing forth from within the person who believes on Him. Faith in Christ opens up a fountain of the Spirit in the belly of the believer. In John 4, Jesus calls it "rivers of living water." As Jacob provided a well of physical water, so Jesus Christ opens up in the believer an inward spring of spiritual reality. That is deep.
I pray you open up for God's depth in you. We have a call for a deeper walk with our God. This is our infinite moment of great adventure with God. Heed His call now! Step out, step in, and step up. The well is deep.
