About Paula H. Mathis
Paula Hurndon Mathis was born and raised in Washington, DC. After high school she attended college where her talents in communication, specifically writing, would surface. However, after three years and never declaring a major, Paula would close one door and open another. As mother of four and wife, Paula would settle in to raise her children alongside her husband but never losing the thirst to express herself through writing.
Paula continued to be consumed with written expression and would use every opportunity, as the old folks said, "To give someone a piece of her mind" – on paper! Her family continues to quip about her arsenal which consisted of paper and pen. Her children recall being fired upon often but the assault propelled by her pen seemed to be aimed most times at her husband (smile). Nonetheless, Larry would become her most beloved supporter. One of several tags often used by Paula acknowledges, "I used to write wrong but now I write right"! The very expression of her past writing fete's, albeit now refined through God's blessing on her gift and its purpose. As poet she has been able to evangelize the Word of God using transparency and God's truth in His Word. All done while using the pattern of Jesus to love always, while reaching the beloved of God. Her technique of transparency and truth has been said to be refreshing.
With a humble heart, Paula declares her Kingdom assignment as Evangelist and Poet for the Lord. She proudly walks out her ministry every opportunity she gets while boldly seeking after the hearts of those who are "Lost in the Storms…" of life. She uses the blessing of poetry and plain talk to point others toward Jesus.
Paula has been blessed to share her gift of poetry at various church and social venues throughout the Washington metropolitan area. Paula's continued passion for the abundant life offered through Christ, has opened other opportunities such as being the face and voice behind two major campaigns for the American Lung Association fostered to assist smokers with quitting. Her testimony continues to be seen on the Patient Channel in various medical facilities throughout the country as well as on YouTube at "The Quitter in You – Paula's Story".
Paula's first book "Lost in the Storm…Found in the Rainbow" shares a truth filled journey where she uses the sweetness of poetry to open up a real world view of life's bondages and where freedom is found. She uses deliberate boldness in this small but powerful book to chronicle what happens when in life we ignore the right voice. The format is unique and the poetry and prose is thought provoking; inspired and carved directly from the poetic books found in the Old Testament.
Paula is working on her second book, "Life's Impressions - A Poetic Journey", a prompting inspired by God, to open up places of reflection in the hearts of those who confess to be Disciples of Christ.
By the way, Paula went back to school after 36 years, and graduated with a BA in Biblical Studies from Lancaster Bible College in 2017, then she obtained her Master's Degree of Christian Counseling from Word of Prayer Bible Institute in 2020.
